From: "Fr John W Fenton (by way of Rev. Eric J. Stefanski, )" To: Subject: HP: Mass in Time of War Date: Thursday, November 01, 2001 1:01 PM Since there is so much talk in the media about yesterday's attack being "an act of war," and since it is not unlikely that some military action will happen (if not the formal declaration of war), it seems fitting to provide the following propers in the event that military action occurs. (Some may even consider that these propers speak more adequately to yesterday's events than those for Buss- und Bettag.) NOTE: With the exception of the collect, epistle, chief hymn and post-communion collect, these propers are from the Tridentine Missal. The collect is from Vespers, and the post-communion collect is that appointed for Passion Sunday (Judica, Fifth Sunday in Lent). IN TIME OF WAR Violet Introit + Psalm 25.6,2,22,1,2 Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they are from of old. Let not my enemies triumph over me: redeem Israel, O God, out of all their troubles! Ps. To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in You; let me not be ashamed. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses, for they are from of old. Let not my enemies triumph over me: redeem Israel, O God, out of all their troubles! The Gloria in Excelsis is omitted. Collect O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels and all just works do proceed: give to us, Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to you’re your commandments, and also that we, being defended by You from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit: one God, now and forever. Old Testament + Jeremiah 42.1-12 A reading from the first book of Jeremiah. In those days all the captains of the forces, Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please, let our petition be acceptable to you, and pray for us to the Lord your God, for all this remnant (since we are left but a few of many, as you can see), that the Lord your God may show us the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.” Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Indeed, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it shall be, that whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you.” So they said to Jeremiah, “Let the Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not do according to everything which the Lord your God sends us by you. Whether it is pleasing or displeasing, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.” And it happened after ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition before Him: ‘If you will still remain in this land, then I will build you and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up. For I relent concerning the disaster that I have brought upon you. Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; do not be afraid of him,’ says the Lord, ‘for I am with you, to save you and deliver you from his hand. And I will show you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and cause you to return to your own land.’” The Word of the Lord. Gradual + Psalm 77.14-15 You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. You have with Your arm redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Epistle + 1 Peter 3.8-15 A reading from first epistle of blessed Peter the Apostle. Beloved: All of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For, He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. The Word of the Lord. Tract + Psalm 103.10, 79.8-9 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us! Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us, for we have been brought very low. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins, for Your name’s sake! Gospel + St. Matthew 24.3-13 The Lord be with you. The Holy Gospel of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. + At that time, as Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” The Gospel of the Lord. Chief Hymn “When in the Hour of Utmost Need” (Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten) Offertorium + Psalm 18.27,31 You will save the humble, O Lord, but will bring down the haughty. For who is God, but the Lord? Preface Sundays after Michaelmass Communio + Psalm 31.2 Bow down Your ear to me, make haste to deliver me; Be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me. Post-Communion Collect Assist us mercifully, O Lord our God: that we whom You have refreshed with Your holy Sacrament; may be defended by Your perpetual help, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit: one God, now and forever. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Rev.
